Marshall Islands Current Events and Forum Discussion

RMI DEBT: A $1 million government debt to the national social security fund caused a temporary cut-off of loans to government workers by a local bank and produced a scramble at the Ministry of Finance to bring retirement tax payments up to date. Marshall Islands Social Security Administration(MISSA) officials said Friday that the Ministry of Finance began making large payments late last week, and continued to pay off the debt this week in an effort to bring retirement and health fund payments current through March 31. It has not paid taxes yet for the two pay periods in April, social security officials said.Bank of Marshall Islands temporarily cut off processing loans for government workers because of what officials said was a high risk of not being able to collect on loan payments from the government.
