(September 15, 2000, Washington, D.C.) In Washington, D.C. earlier this week, Bruce Babbitt, the Secretary of the Interior, welcomed the Honorable Kessai Note, Third President of the Marshall Islands.

His Excellency Kessai H. Note, President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands responded to Dr. Halapua’s presentation by pointing out that the planet is being pushed by an invisible hand to come together, and this trend is being accelerated by globalization. The President underscored the fact that, like it or not, globalization is here and the Pacific Islands had better be prepared for it.

Monday’s (January 15th’s) vote of "no confidence," turned into a vote of confidence for President Kessai Note, as 19 Nitijela members voted for the current government, ending the move by the opposition to unseat Note’s one-year-old administration.

Kessai Note, whose father was a Bikinian, was elected unanimously as President of the Marshall Islands on January 3, 2000.

Marshall Islands President Kessai Note called island cultural a "safety net for society" which plays a major role in protecting the fragile environment and Pacific way of life.
