A presidential delegation from the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is on its way to Hawaii today Wednesday and is expected to meet with Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie in Honolulu to discuss issues relating to Compact Impact. 

RMI President Christopher J. Loeak and First Lady Lieom Anono Loeak are accompanied by Minister in Assistance Tony de Brum and presidential staffers.

Intended at providing new members of the  Nitijela (Parliament) how to effectively use parliamentary processes to better advance national priorities, an Induction Seminar for the  Nitijela was conducted at the International Conference Center from January 25-27, 2012. Hosted by the Nitijela Secretariat with support from UNDP Pacific Center, the induction seminar was facilitated by Senator Kalani English, a United States Senator from the State of Hawaii, and UNDP’s Pacific Regional Governance Advisor, Charmaine Rodrigues.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands' (RMI) Cabinet has started facilitating a series of immediate consultations from various government ministries and agencies that is critical in the initiation of policies, programs, and services. Last week, the Office of the Chief Secretary released a schedule of preliminary Cabinet briefings to be presented by ministries and agencies that will continue on for the next two weeks. 

The Ministry of Health held the first scheduled Cabinet briefing at the Cabinet Conference room on Monday January 23, 2012.


McREL Wins Pacific Region Education Contract over PREL

In its inaugural bid to operate the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) in the Pacific region, McREL has received a five-year, $24 million contract from the U.S. Department of Education. The REL Pacific, which will be administered by McREL’s Pacific Center for Changing the Odds in Honolulu, Hawaii, serves the state of Hawaii; the territories of American Samoa, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands; and three nations in free association with the United States—the Federated States of Micronesia (Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and Yap), Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.

Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) is accepting online applications for the Pacific Teacher Scholarship Program for Academic Year 2012–2013. The application deadline is April 1, 2012.  

PREL awards about five scholarships each year to residents of the U.S.-affiliated Pacific to honor their commitment to teaching excellence. The amounts vary from $500 to $1,000.

In his inaugural address, President Christopher Jorebon Loeak identified the areas, in which, the new administration will give greater attention to, such as in the areas of education, local capacity building, private sector, and government reform, among other priority areas, for the next four years. “The strength and success of this country depends in large measures on the education, training, productivity, and work ethics of the Marshallese people,” stated President Loeak.

Ambassador George T.K. Li of the Republic of China (Taiwan) presented a check in the amount of TWO MILLION SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND US DOLLARS (US$2,750,000.00) to Hon. Dennis Momotaro, Minister of Finance, at the RMI Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 10:00 am on January 18, 2012.  The donation ceremony was witnessed by Hon. Philip H. Muller, Minister of Foreign Affairs, other RMI Government officials, as well as staff of the ROC (Taiwan) Embassy.

U.S. Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Tests for 2012 are scheduled for the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) this month.

Eligible Marshallese and American citizens between the ages of 17 and 34 will be offered the opportunity to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test this month on Ebeye, Kwajalein and Majuro between January 18 and January 27.

Ingram with the assistance of the Chief Clerk of the Courts Ingrid K. Kabua at the International Conference Center, with the public inauguration for the President and Cabinet Ministers slated for today.

At the Marshall Islands’ Nitijela Chamber, the thirty-three members of parliament were sworn in today. By the end of the opening day of the 34th Constitutional Regular Session, a new leadership team for the Republic was elected. Ailinglaplap Senator Christopher J. Loeak will take the reign of the small, Pacific nation as President.  Likiep Senator Donald F. Capelle was elected as Speaker and Kili-Bikini-Ejit Senator Tomaki Juda as Vice-Speaker.

The federal government will develop a plan to address the economic impact Compact of Free Association (COFA) Migrants are having on Hawaii’s economy and develop a plan to mitigate the burden for the state, Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Senator Daniel K. Akaka, U.S. Representative Mazie K. Hirono and U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa announced today.

The Compact of Free Association refers to the legal relationship between the United States and the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
