MARSHALLESE FILM EXPLORES YOKWE SPIRIT

Yokwe Bartowe= Yokwe Bartowe is the story of a young girl named Lijiamao who is kidnapped by an evil demon bird. The ancient Marshallese legend of the 'kwolej' bird dictates that its main mission in life is to create sorrow and misfortune in the world.

The new Marshall Islands' film exploring the Yokwe spirit of the Marshallese culture and people opens at K & K Theaters in Majuro on January 29.

Yokwe Bartowe, a full-length feature in Marshallese with English sub-titles, is the second for fledgling Microwave Films. It was shot on location in Majuro Atoll and Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, and in Springdale, Arkansas.

Lyel Tarkwon and Martha Horiiuchi, students at the College of the Marshall Islands (CMI) in real life and in the movie, play the lead characters of Bartowe and his girlfriend. Netha Gideon returns from her role in Ña Noniep and stars as Lijimu the Sorceress, and Nica Wase stars as Madam Kwolej, the human form of the evil kwolej bird. Headlining also are Jefferson Paulis and Billma Melson as Lijiamao, Bartowe's kidnapped little sister.

These and other volunteer actors are from local organizations, including the College of the Marshall Islands, the Majuro Cooperative School, and the Women's Athletic Club (WAC).

The film was directed and produced by Jack Niedenthal and Suzanne Chutaro, with original screenplay by Niedenthal.

The film is expected to run for two weeks, and the DVD release may be in early March.

All proceeds from Yokwe Bartowe will go the Majuro Cooperative School.

RMI Supports Copenhagen Accord on Climate Change But Demands A Legal Treaty

RMI has conveyed its political support for the Copenhagen Accord, the rushed and controversial political agreement offered at last December’s global climate negotiations in Denmark.

But RMI, which faces the risk of losing its statehood to rising seas, also linked its support to a demand for progress this year towards the adoption of a legally-binding treaty of sufficient ambition to ensure the survival of the most vulnerable nations.

Marshall Islands' Secured Transactions Act Will Improve Access to Finance, Says ADB

The Secured Transactions Act effective now in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), will make it easier for people to access business and consumer loans, using personal property as collateral. Under the Act, individuals using personal property as collateral to secure loans, register details of the transaction with the new Secured Transactions Registry. The Registry, located at the Land Registration Authority office is available online and may be electronically searched. ADB has supported RMI since 2005, to help establish the Registry which was prepared following local consultations.

“The Secured Transactions Act will make it easier for people to secure loans to start or grow a business, using personal property such as boats, or farm equipment,” said Mattlan Zackhras, Minister of Resources and Development (MRD) of the RMI Government.
